POLITICAL MS: Trump and Clinton – The final campaign tweets

In the many months leading up to the US election, both of the main candidates were active on Twitter. 

Here we give you a snapshot of the final campaign tweets.


The basics

The official Clinton account was set up in April 2013. As of noon on 7th November 2016 (GMT), the account was listed as having 10.2 million followers. At this time, 9,712 tweets had been sent from the account. The account was listed as following 758 other accounts, 78 of which included the word ‘Hillary’ in their account name. The account did not follow Donald Trump’s account.

The official Trump account was set up in March 2009. As of noon on 7th November 2016 (GMT), the account was listed as having 13 million followers. At this time, 33.9K tweets had been sent from the account. The account was listed as following 41 other accounts, 17 of which included the word ‘Trump’ in their account name. The account did not follow Hillary Clinton’s account.

Saturday, November 5th

19 original tweets were sent from Hillary Clinton’s account.

Of these, 5 mentioned or showed footage/image of her opponent.

The lowest number of retweets was 1.6K. The highest number of retweets was 26K (the latter featured the artists Beyonce and Jay Z).

The account retweeted 15 tweets.


9 original tweets were sent from Donald Trump’s account.

Of these, 3 mentioned or showed footage/image of his opponent.

The original tweets received between 5.7K and 53K retweets (the latter read ‘Make America Great Again’).

The account didn’t retweet.

 

Sunday 6th November

25 original tweets were sent from Hillary Clinton’s account.

Of these, 5 mentioned or showed footage/image of her opponent

The lowest number of retweets gained was 914. The highest number of retweets was 8.1K.

The account retweeted 8 tweets.


8 original tweets were sent from Donald Trump’s account.

Of these none mentioned or showed footage/image of his opponent.

The original tweets received between 4.6K and 19K retweets.

The account retweeted 2 tweets.

 

Monday 7th November (updated 8th Nov)

41 original tweets were sent from Hillary Clinton’s account.

Of these, 9 mentioned or showed footage/image of her opponent

The lowest number of retweets was 826. The highest number of retweets was 25K.

The account retweeted 10 tweets.


13 original tweets were sent from Donald Trump’s account.

Of these none mentioned or showed footage/image of his opponent.

The lowest number of retweets was 7.2K. The highest number of retweets was 19K.

The account didn’t retweet.

The tweets included in this snapshot are the tweets sent by the candidates (or more precisely, from the candidates’ official Twitter accounts) during the final days leading up to the election.

Tweets posted and later removed, if any, are not part of the analysis. The snapshot only includes tweets that were still available to view on 7th November 2016.
