If you need to tone up and can’t quite face the gym or the expense of a personal trainer, an exercise app is a good alternative. Having tested a range of these over the last six months, I particularly recommend The Squat Challenge, The Toned Arms Challenge and The Plank Challenge. These can all be downloaded free of charge from iTunes. (You’ll have to put up with the occasional advertisement, but they’re not too intrusive and can easily be clicked away).
Once you open the app, you pick a level and start the 30 day challenge. (Most have a rest day every four days). All you need is a bit of floor space and a mat and you’re away.
The plank app is particularly useful, because it counts down the last ten seconds, which are the hardest to endure and therefore tend to make people (me) prone to very fast counting.
All the apps provide useful instructions, however, if you’re unsure about anything or completely new to this type of exercise, a practice session with a trainer will be a good investment.
